To rzadko spotykana, bujna, rozłożysta bylina z sercowatymi, skórzastymi ciemnoszarozielonymi liśćmi o średnicy do 10 cm. W okresie od późnej wiosny do połowy lata wzniesione, rozgałęziające się pędy tworzą luźne wiechy złożone z makowatych, lśniąco białych kwiatów o średnicy do 5 cm. Roślina dorasta do około 40 cm wysokości; w dobrych warunkach szeroko i szybko się rozrasta, dzięki czemu świetnie sprawdza się jako roślina okrywowa na wilgotne, zacienione stanowiska. Pasuje do ogrodów naturalistycznych, leśnych i japońskich.
Nadaje się na duże skalniaki, na brzegi strumyków i oczek wodnych, można sadzić również pod krzewami.

Roślina ta jest odporna na mróz. Wymaga częściowo zacienionego lub cienistego stanowiska i wilgotnego, ale przepuszczalnego i próchnicznego podłoża. Znosi też pełne nasłonecznienie, jeśli jest odpowiednio nawadniana.
