To mało znany świerk, zupełnie odporny na nasze warunki klimatyczne. Pochodzi z Chin, rośnie tam na terenach górzystych do 3000 m n. p. m. Wykazuje dużą zmienność geograficzną.
Niezwykle malownicza odmiana o niebieskawozielonych igłach i szerokostożkowej, gęsto ugałęzionej koronie. Pień pokryty silnie złuszczającą się korowiną. Pędy żółtobrązowe lub pomarańczowoszare. Pąki jajowate. Igły niebieskawozielone, grube, 10-20 mm długości, kłujące, nastroszone, ułożone na pędzie promieniście. Szyszki cylindryczne, 8-15 cm długości.
Jako jedyny gatunek świerka rośnie na półpustyniach, co wiąże się z jego wyjątkową odpornością na suszę i mrozy. W młodości wykazuje się wolnym wzrostem, starszy już rośnie szybciej. W naszym klimacie, w wieku 40 lat, dorasta do około 8-12 m wysokości. Ze względu na swoje cechy doskonale rośnie w miejscach o małej ilości opadów, tworząc przy tym gęste i szerokie korony. Nadaje się jako soliter do dużych ogrodów i parków na miejsca słoneczne.
W stanie naturalnym z powodu masowej wycinki lasów ten gatunek zagrożony jest wyginięciem. Warto mieć taki okaz w kolekcji.
